Hello World and welcome to my blog.
I am a Medical Doctor practicing in Singapore. My Medical Practice has been focused on Men’s Health since 2005.
I have treated thousands of men for issues ranging from sexual health problems to problems with fertility. Also from treating hormone imbalances to treating problems arising from prostate enlargement and inflammation.
I started this blog to share my practice experience and also blog about the latest research information and how this translates to my practice.
I hope to develop a community were we can all come together and share our experiences and knowledge. With the aim of ultimately advancing our own health, that of our loved ones and the field of Men’s Health.
My Journey
My journey in Men’s Health Medicine started after I completed my mandatory service in the public hospitals of Singapore. As I was preparing to come out into the world of private practice, I still had not cemented an idea of what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I wanted to spend more time empowering and educating patients to take charge of their own health. And not get stuck in a rut running a “factory line” clinic.
At the time, Men’s Health was not yet an established field of study. Prostate problems were dealt with by Urologists. Aging and hormone issues were treated by Endocrinologists. HIV was diagnosed and treated by Infectious Diseases Physicians. STDs were diagnosed and treated by (surprise surprise) Dermatologists. Fertility issues were dealt with by Gynecologists or Urologists depending on who the couple saw first.
I was first inspired by the US Health and Human Services establishing a department for Men’s Health. This recognized the unique health seeking behavior of men and to brought all the services from sexual function to mental health under one roof.
As it turns out, the clinic that I set up and was running was chosen to be one of the Anonymous HIV Testing Sites in Singapore. Almost overnight, I started to see many patients who had concerns over HIV and their sexual health in general. I strived to and ultimately successfully created a safe space where patients could freely discuss their sexual health concerns with a medical professional in absolute confidence. Due to the higher prevalence and incidence of HIV in Singapore among men as compared to women, most of my patients were men.
As I built my practice around Men’s Health I attended courses and took part in conferences to further my knowledge. I attained my Certificate in Practical Andrology and was admitted as a Member to the Singapore Men’s Health Society. Over the years I had the privilege to speak at man conferences to share my knowledge with the next generation of Doctors.
What I also learned during my years of practice was that patients are an amazing source of knowledge and information. Many of my patients come to see me after having done extensive research on their symptoms. And I really enjoy and appreciate having a conversation with them. I personally believe that the more a patient knows of his condition, the more he is empowered to take charge of it and he will inevitably do well.
So I set up this blog with a dream of creating a community of patients, Doctors and care-givers to have an open discussion on various Men’s Health issues. To learn from each other and to help each other solve problems.
Welcome to my blog! Ask your questions and join the conversation!
