Where to buy Pristinamycin for Mycoplasma Genitalium in Singapore

bacteria, medical, biology

Mycoplasma Genitalium (MG) is a small bacteria that infects the urethra causing a urethritis. It is a sexually transmitted infection. It is grouped with other infections and collectively called NSU (Non-Specific Urethritis a.k.a. Non-Gonococcal Urethritis).

Because testing for MG is not routinely part of a Urine STD screening panel, it is frequently missed. So if you have symptoms of a Urethritis and your STD Urine tests are “all clear”, check specifically if there was a test for MG. If there was not, have a discussion with your Doctor if an MG test is appropriate for you.

MG is a sexually transmitted disease. It can be transmitted by any kind of sexual contact and does not necessarily require penetrative sex to transmit.

How common is Mycoplasma Genitalium?

No one really knows. Although one study reports up to 10% of sexually active adults carry it.

What are the symptoms of a Mycoplasma Genitalium infection?

Many people who are infected with MG actually do not have any symptoms. Many cases of MG infections are actually detected on screening.

For those who do develop symptoms, common symptoms include discomfort passing urine and a mild discharge. Very rarely there is actually pain on passing urine. Some patients even describe it as just an itch in the urethra. The discharge can also be very mild. It is usually a clear, greenish, yellowish discharge. Sometimes patients only notice the discharge as a stain on the shorts in the morning.

How can I get tested for Mycoplasma Genitalium?

Testing for MG requires only a urine sample. The most accurate and reliable test currently available is the PCR test. This test looks for pieces of the MG genetic material.

What is the treatment for Mycoplasma Genitalium?

Antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment for MG. There are several classes of antibiotics that may be effective against MG. These include Tetracyclines, Quinolones and Macrolides.

Rarely, all 3 of these medicines fail. And when they do, there is evidence to show that another type of combination antibiotic called Pristinamycin works.

How can I make sure I am cured of Mycoplasma Genitalium?

Doctors will retest you for MG after completion of your antibiotics. You will have to wait between 2 weeks to one month after finishing your treatment to get tested again. Testing too early may give you an inaccurate result.

Do condoms protect me from Mycoplasma Genitalium?

Condoms can certainly reduce your risk of getting infected with MG. However it does not protect you 100%.
